Local Solar Company to Support Florida Power & Light’s Petition to Hike Energy Rates
Sarasota, FL - (Wednesday, June 17, 2009) - Sarasota-based Elite Solar Services will rally this Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Sarasota City Commission Chambers outside City Hall to support Florida Power & Light (FPL) petition filed on March 18, 2009 with the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) for a base rate adjustment to start January 1, 2010.
Confused as to why a solar company would want to support and participate? Read on…
Monica Kennedy of Elite Solar Services said, “There has never been a better opportunity to show your support for job creation, energy independence and renewable energy. FPL is increasing electricity rates and by law ‘Your’ Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) must hear general input from the public. Use this opportunity to show these hard working commissioners that Floridians need a Feed-in Tariff (FiT) and Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) passed during the next legislative session; this is definitely a last chance meeting for all of us.” FP&L is one of the greenest utilities in the country and has advanced renewables like no other – as long as they are the only ones allowed to profit from it.
The Florida State Legislature receives recommendations concerning energy policy from the Public Service Commission to guide the state government in passing laws. These meetings represent the chance of having voices heard, so Florida can adopt a FiT or Renewable Energy Dividend and an RPS before Michigan does; this is the policy that helped Germany become the leader in solar, creating 250,000 permanent jobs for plumbers, electricians, roofers, administrators, and many more. The greatest part about this policy is that it doesn’t cost the state or taxpayers anything.
According to The European Environment Agency, FiT is an incentive structure to encourage the adoption of renewable energy through government legislation. The electricity utilities are obligated to buy electricity from renewable sources, such as solar photovoltaics, wind power, biomass, hydro and geothermal at above-market rates set by the government.
If you miss the Sarasota meeting, there are six other meetings scheduled throughout the state.
